Russians win out in O1 Properties Christmas Cup 2017

January 9, 2017. International tennis juniors gathered in Moscow for this year’s TE1 O1 Properties Christmas Cup,  a major international  event of the Basel-based European Tennis Federation. The annual tournament, which ran from 30 December to 7 January, was held at the Alexander Ostrovsky Tennis Academy in the Moscow suburb of Khimki and brought together 124 players from 26 countries, including the Canadian and Bulgarian national teams, as well as players from France, Italy, Serbia, and other countries.

O1 Properties is the chief sponsor of the Christmas Cup and the Alexander Ostrovsky Tennis Academy is named after the company’s CEO.

The absolute winner of this year’s tournament was Maria Timofeyeva (Russia), who won the singles competition for girls and also took the girls doubles  title in partnership with Oksana Selekhmeteva. Maria is a student at the Alexander Ostrovsky Academy. The boys singles were won by Mikhail Gorokhov (Russia), and first place in the men’s pairs went to Tzotne Dzimistarishvili (Georgia) and his partner Alejandro Turriziani-Alvarez (Spain).

Participants and guests were treated to a lavish program of side events and entertainments. The tournament opening ceremony was led by the Russian TV presenter and showman, Ivan Traore, and included a gymnastics display by the Project Hollywood team. On 5 January the Russian tennis stars, Vera Dushevina and Igor Kunitsyn, played an exhibition match with the best junior of 2016, Anastasiya Potapova and Hamad Medjedovic (Serbia). The event was commentated by the TV sports presenter, Sophia Tartakova. Also on 5 January there was a Kids Day for child players of Russia’s 10s Minitennis League .

The Christmas Cup Players were taken on a tour of Red Square, a “Funny Creatures” entertainment animation and photo-booth were on hand every day of the tournament,  and there was a series of special competitions, including power-serv,  Play Station Battle football tournament, as well as a painting master class.

The Christmas Cup guests included the vice-president of the Russian Tennis Federation(RTF), Alexei Selivanenko, the head coach of CSKA tennis club, Alexei Zhuk, the RTF vice president, Professor Anna Skorodumova, the deputy head of the Khimki administration for social policy, culture and sport, Yury Vaulin, and many other sports and culture personalities.

Congratulating the winners and participants at the closing ceremony, Alexei Selivanenko was joined by the captain of the Russian women's national team Anastasia Myskina, the founder of the Academy, Alexander Ostrovsky, as well as the world’s top-ranked junior, Anastasiya Potapova. As in previous years, the competition ended with a firework display.
